Dorje Shugden saved the Dalai Lama’s life

In his autobiography Freedom In Exile, the Dalai Lama describes how his escape from Tibet was possible because of a map drawn by the State Oracle Nechung:
“Still in trance the medium stumbled forward, took paper and a pencil and drew clearly and precisely the escape route…..”
You may be surprised to learn that this is a lie – the Dalai Lama owes his life to the Deity whose practice he has banned: Dorje Shugden.
The 1998 Swiss documentary ’10 vor 10′ on the Dorje Shugden issue revealed the truth of this matter.
Here is a transcript of the relevant part:
Narrator: The previous abbot of this monastery [Sera Monastery] accompanied the Dalai Lama. Lobsang Yeshe was his assistant. He went to the oracle of Dorje Shugden in his retreat in order to request exact instructions, says Lobsang Yeshe. The oracle of this deity that is now prohibited by the Dalai Lama.
Losang Yeshe: I was sent to ask the oracle. I was the only one present. The oracle said that the Chinese had prepared everything. The life of the Dalai Lama is no longer safe. You should go to the Summer Palace tomorrow and ask the Dalai Lama to leave the country via the southern route.
Reporter: Was this the advice of the oracle?
Lobsang Yeshe: Yes. That is what the protector told me through the oracle. Just like we are talking to each other.
Lobsang Yeshe tells us that the oracle gave precise instructions as to how and by which route the escape should take place with the monks as his bodyguard.
Reporter: But the Dalai Lama does not recognize the help of this deity!Lobsang Yeshe: That contradicts the law of truth! Actually, how can he speak like that? If it had not been for Dorje Shugden’s help at that time, an escape would have been really difficult.
Lobsang Yeshe is very polite. He says ‘That contradicts the law of truth’. What he means is ‘this is a lie’.
This raises some uncomfortable questions about the Dalai Lama’s conduct with respect to the Dorje Shugden issue:
- The Dalai Lama knows that it was Dorje Shugden who saved his life, so why is he saying that he is an evil spirit? Surely he knows through his own experience that Dorje Shugden is a Buddha?
- Why is he making false claims against Dorje Shugden and whipping up sectarian hatred against practitioners?
- Why is he repaying Dorje Shugden’s kindness in saving his life by destroying the practice of this Deity?
- Most importantly: Why is he deceiving everyone over this?
I’d be very grateful if the Dalai Lama or any of his followers could answer these questions. Dalai Lama, why are you lying?

Thank you for reporting on this. Everyone used to know that Dorje Shugden was responsible for the 14th Dalai Lama’s escape from Tibet. Then that was edited out as it was inconvenient in the face of the Dalai Lama’s ban.
Dorje Shugden practitioners and Lamas have been extremely loyal and helpful to the Dalai Lama both while in Tibet and in the community in exile in India — for years helping re-establish monasteries, schools, hospitals and so on. They never considered themselves enemies of the Dalai Lama. His ban of their religious practice is a huge betrayal of their trust and friendship.
Then the Dalai Lama has the hubris to think he can get away with lying about Dorje Shugden and Dorje Shugden practitioners to justify this ban. Very sad.
